Marblehead's Holiday Season Starts In November, On Pleasant Street

When does the holiday season start in Marblehead? Most calendars say the Christmas Walk, which the Marblehead Chamber of Commerce has set for Dec. 4–5 this year according to the Marblehead Current. The November calendar starts it earlier. On Wednesday, Nov. 4, a painting is unveiled at 62 Pleasant Street, and it will be given away at the Dec. 12 Holiday Pops concert in Abbot Hall. The Winter Exhibition that opens Nov. 7 runs until Christmas Eve. The holiday market at Boston Yacht Club opens on Friday, Nov. 20, the evening before the last farmers market of the year. Much of December in Marblehead is set up in November, and most of the setup happens along one street.

Before any of that, Halloween week gives the town a few last days outside.

Thursday, Oct. 29: One Of The Last Afternoons Outdoors

The Chamber and local businesses are hosting trick-or-treating in Marblehead's business districts from 4 to 6 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 29. Bobbles & Lace at 139 Washington St. is running face-painting pop-ups and serving Halloween treats during those hours. Hip Baby Gear has The Cappy Hour Patch Bar on hand so children can design their own trick-or-treat totes. The Pumpkin Illumination is back at the Lee Mansion Garden from 4 to 6:30 p.m., with prizes in categories from Scariest Pumpkin to Most Marblehead.

One storefront is new on the route this year. Lunita, a children's clothing and gift shop at 27 Atlantic Ave., announced in the Marblehead Current that it planned to open Saturday, Oct. 3.

The weekend that follows is still outdoors, but not for long. On Friday morning, Abbot Public Library holds its Children's Halloween Party from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m., and online registration is required. The Rotary Club of Marblehead 5K starts at 11 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 1, at Crocker Park and runs a route through Old Town before finishing back at the park. The Marblehead Independent reports that the awards gathering is at Boston Yacht Club. The Discover Marblehead events calendar says registrations support local youth education programs. Halloween weekend is the last stretch of the year when the town's big gatherings happen outside. After that they move indoors.

Wednesday, Nov. 4: The Painting That Starts December

The clearest sign that the holiday season has begun is a free reception on a Wednesday evening. Marblehead Harbor Rotary is honoring artist Todd Zalewski at the Masons' Philanthropic Building, 62 Pleasant Street, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. He is unveiling "Light Tower at Chandler Hovey Park," this year's Holiday Pops signature painting. It is done in acrylics in his hyper-realist style and framed by Arnould Gallery and Framery. Every Little Breeze Catering is providing light refreshments, and there is a cash bar. The painting goes to a winning raffle ticket holder at the Dec. 12 Holiday Pops concert in Abbot Hall. The Marblehead Current reports that raffle tickets will be sold at the reception and the winner drawn during intermission at the concert.

The painting is unveiled on Nov. 4, and the December concert decides who takes it home. The rest of the month follows the same pattern, and many of the venues are on the same street.

Why Pleasant Street Holds The Month

Look at where November's events take place and Pleasant Street comes up again and again.

Address What happens there in November
62 Pleasant St. Masons' Philanthropic Building, Holiday Pops painting reveal, Nov. 4
123 Pleasant St. The Chamber's new office at Local Works; The Beacon's live music next door
217 Pleasant St. Veterans Middle School, Saturday farmers market through Nov. 21
235 Pleasant St. Abbot Public Library, FallFest on Nov. 7

The Chamber put itself on this street over the summer. It had moved to 123 Pleasant St. at Local Works by the time of its Aug. 25 announcement in the Marblehead Current. The Beacon shares that address. It has B Side Hustle on Friday, Oct. 30, at 9 p.m. and its annual Halloween party with The Lisa Love Experience on Saturday, Oct. 31, also at 9 p.m.

On Saturday, Nov. 7, the library holds FallFest from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The day includes making maps, wands, helmets and metal bookmarks, Dungeons and Dragons with Danger Wizard, and a chance to meet adoptable dogs from Cape Ann Animal Aid. Space is limited, so registration is required. The farmers market runs 9 a.m. to noon that same morning at Veterans Middle School, every Saturday through Nov. 21, so one Saturday covers both ends of the street.

The other important building is Abbot Hall, at 188 Washington St. The Marblehead Current reports that the town's Veterans Day ceremony will be held there on Wednesday, Nov. 11, and will include the dedication of a chair and a Missing Man Table. The report did not give a time. Abbot Hall is also where the Nov. 4 painting will be raffled at the Dec. 12 Holiday Pops concert.

Thursday, Nov. 12: An Anniversary, A Gala, And A Show That Runs To Christmas Eve

An exhibition opening, an anniversary and a gala, all within one week, set up the gift-giving weeks ahead.

The Marblehead Arts Association's 2026 Winter Exhibition opens Nov. 7 and runs through Dec. 24, and the opening reception is Sunday, Nov. 8, from 2 to 4 p.m. The exhibition listing puts the run at about seven weeks, so it will still be up during the Christmas Walk. On Nov. 14 and 15 the association also has a two-day beginner workshop in water-mixable oils with artist Joli Ayn Wood, with all materials included.

Hestia Creations is celebrating its 40th anniversary on Nov. 12 from 4 to 7 p.m. The evening includes the debut of a new Nativity figure and accessories and this year's Marblehead AmeriScape. Resident artist Linda Daddarrio, who has made Hestia's sculptures for more than 30 years, will sign pieces. Every purchase that evening enters the buyer in a drawing for a one-of-a-kind Hestia Signature AmeriScape ornament of their own home, valued at $500. Hestia's pottery studio has more holiday nights later in the month: a 13-inch Lighted Christmas Tree painting class on Nov. 17 and a Family Menorah Painting Night on Nov. 19, and both require reservations.

At 7 p.m. that same Thursday, the Marblehead Friends of the Performing Arts holds its Rock the Arts Gala at King Hooper Mansion, the home of the Marblehead Arts Association. The gala supports Marblehead High School's performing arts students and teachers and has live music by 5xFast, raffles and a silent auction.

The next evening, Friday, Nov. 13, Second Sail brings a curated children's consignment pop-up to MacRae's at 108 Washington Street from 5 to 8 p.m. It continues Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. On Thursday, Nov. 19, the Arts Association and Gene Arnould present Cassandre McKinley in the Jazz at the Arts series. Doors open at 6:30 p.m., and tickets are $35, sold online, at the association, or at Arnould Gallery. The framing shop that framed the Holiday Pops painting is also one of the places selling jazz tickets.

Friday, Nov. 20, And Saturday, Nov. 21: The Market Closes And The Fair Opens

The month peaks on one weekend at the harbor. Two events run back to back over two days:

  1. Friday, Nov. 20, 6 to 9 p.m. Harbor Holidays opens at Boston Yacht Club, 1 Front Street. Artists and craftspeople sell their work, admission is free and open to the public, and there is a cash bar on Friday night.
  2. Saturday, Nov. 21, 9 a.m. to noon. The last Marblehead Farmers' Market of the season is held at Veterans Middle School, 217 Pleasant St.
  3. Saturday, Nov. 21, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Harbor Holidays reopens at Boston Yacht Club, with the cash bar open from noon to 4.

That Saturday morning is the last time this year the market and a holiday fair overlap. A shopper can buy produce on Pleasant Street until noon and finish their gift shopping by the harbor that afternoon. The Boston Yacht Club is the same building where 5K runners gathered for awards on Nov. 1, so the month starts and ends at 1 Front Street.

Two weeks later comes the Christmas Walk on Dec. 4 and 5. By then the Holiday Pops painting has been unveiled for a month, the Winter Exhibition has been open for four weeks, and the Harbor Holidays artisans have already had their weekend. The full November schedule is on the Discover Marblehead events calendar, which lists each event with its host's registration or ticket link.

If the slower weeks before the holidays are when you start thinking about your own home, whether that means planning for next spring, settling an estate, or simply wanting to know what your house is worth, Annie Wachtel is glad to talk it through over the quiet stretch of November. Request a confidential market consultation, and we can set a time around the market Saturdays and the evenings on Pleasant Street.
